A study of public opinion, conducted roughly two years after the cessation of German production of nuclear energy, showed that a majority of Germans support the search for a permanent storage location for nuclear waste. The authorities in Germany have been looking for a geologically safe location for the storage of about 27 thousand cubic meters of nuclear waste, accumulated over more than 60 years of nuclear energy production. Berlin has set itself a definitive deadline of 2050 for determining a location where hazardous radioactive waste can be stored underground for a million years.
"We must ensure safe and reliable storage of radioactive waste to protect future generations," noted one of the members of the commission working on this issue.
It is proposed that the search for a location for the storage of nuclear waste will face opposition from the public and will require broad consultations with the residents of the regions where potential sites for creating an underground repository may be chosen.
