Computer Vision Syndrome and Its Remedies

The German Ophthalmology Association highlighted Computer Vision Syndrome as a condition arising from lengthy screen time, causing dry eyes and discomfort. Recommendations include regular blinking, short breaks, and the 20-20-20 rule to alleviate symptoms.


Computer Vision Syndrome and Its Remedies

The medical community of Germany has warned about the possibility of development in employees referred to as "computer vision syndrome". This condition is triggered by prolonged work in front of a computer screen. The main reason for this syndrome is the unconsciously reduced frequency of blinking by the eyes when using a mouse, which leads to decreased secretion of tears and, consequently, feelings of dryness and irritation of the eyes.

Symptoms include sensations of burning and itching in the eyes, as well as headaches. To combat computer vision syndrome, it is recommended to take short breaks for blinking or closing the eyes for a few seconds to moisten the eyes. It is also very helpful to follow the 20-20-20 rule, which states that every 20 minutes you should look away from the screen and focus on an object 20 feet (approximately 6 meters) away for 20 seconds.

The environment in which a person is located also plays an important role, as dry air from heating devices contributes to exacerbating the problem. To maintain humidity in the air, it is necessary to humidify the room.
