According to the information presented by the German Society for Nutrition, some food products may reduce iron absorption in the body. In the first instance, this refers to coffee, black tea, and green tea, which contain tannins that hinder iron absorption.
The society also added that calcium may also slow down iron absorption in the body, and the sources of calcium are dairy products such as milk and yogurt.
Products made from grains, such as bread, pasta, rice, and corn, contain phytates, which bind to iron, making its absorption in the body difficult.
Cola and lemonade are also beverages that slow down iron absorption because they contain phosphate.
Vitamin C, on the contrary, helps the body absorb iron, and its sources include cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, sweet pepper, and citrus fruits such as apples and mandarins.
To ensure that the body can adequately absorb iron, it is recommended to avoid foods that hinder its absorption, along with rich iron products such as red meat, internal organs of animals, such as liver and kidneys, green leafy vegetables like spinach, and legumes, including chickpeas and beans, seeds, and dark chocolate.
It is worth noting that iron plays an important role for health, and its deficiency symptoms include fatigue, weakness, apathy, pallor, dry skin, impaired concentration, headaches, and dizziness.
