Psychological Causes of Dizziness Explained

The German Society of General Medicine and Family Medicine has confirmed that dizziness may be caused by psychological reasons, where it can occur in the context of disorders such as general anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and mental disorders. The society mentioned that individuals suffering from psychological dizziness may feel lightheaded or faint without the presence of other symptoms such as nausea or vomiting.

Additionally, psychological dizziness can be known as 'psychogenic dizziness,' which usually occurs in certain situations that make a person feel psychologically overwhelmed, such as during driving, in public transportation, or in crowded places. Psychological dizziness can also be part of a migraine attack and may be accompanied by other symptoms like rapid heartbeat or tingling.

After excluding organic causes of dizziness, it is advised to visit a psychiatrist for psychological treatment, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, which helps in learning strategies to cope with mental stress and anxiety. Treatment may also include psychiatric medications along with practicing relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation.
