Munich Conference: US and Europe at a Crossroads

The 62nd Munich Security Conference (MSC) opened this Friday in Bavaria amidst a climate of marked uncertainty, with the main focus being the progressive 'decoupling' between the United States and Europe driven by the Donald Trump administration. In a context of redefining the world order, dozens of heads of state, ministers, and military officials are analyzing the impact of Washington's economic and defense policies.

'Europe has been vilified as an aging, slow, and fragmented construction, relegated by history,' stated French President Emmanuel Macron, also describing it as an over-regulated economy and indifferent to innovation.

In this sense, Marco Rubio estimated that Europeans 'want honesty' but, at the same time, seek to distance themselves from Washington's influence on the Ukrainian dossier. Political tension was further exacerbated by the absence of key figures at the forum. J. D. Vance, who was in Italy, did not attend the opening, and Marco Rubio canceled his participation at the last minute. This gesture was interpreted by various analysts present as a reaffirmation that the Trump administration has no intention of allowing Europe to maintain a leading role in peace negotiations.

Meanwhile, Ukraine is trying to expand its interlocutors outside Washington's orbit, while awaiting the next round of negotiations between Moscow, Kyiv, and the White House scheduled for the coming days.

In his closing inaugural speech, Macron called to 'reclaim the values of Europe' and issued a strong warning about the region's current state. He urged member states to establish their own coexistence rules with Russia once a peace agreement is reached, with the central objective of 'limiting the risk of escalation' in the Ukrainian conflict.

According to information from the Argentine News Agency, the German chancellor announced the start of talks with France to strengthen European nuclear deterrence, while British Prime Minister Keir Starmer showed openness to participating in a multinational defense initiative that would oversee the joint acquisition of arms.
