The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday urged the European Union to activate the mutual defense charter enshrined in the founding treaty. "Collective defense is not an optional task for the European Union; it is an obligation enshrined in our treaties," she stated. She added: "Our collective commitment is to stand by each other in the event of aggression, or, to put it simply: one for all and all for one. And that is what Europe means."
