The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, visited Kyiv to announce a new support package totaling 3.5 billion euros. She emphasized that "sovereign and free Ukraine is needed by the whole world," asserting that the EU will accelerate the supply of arms and munitions to Ukraine. Additionally, Ukrainian and Moldovan electricity sectors are moving towards integration with the European electricity market by the end of next year.
Under Merkel's leadership, Germany plays a key role in strengthening European support for Ukraine. During the Cold War, Franco-German relations were crucial for resistance against the Soviet Union. Following the elections in Germany last Sunday, she should aim to form a new broad coalition.
According to the director of the journal "The National Interest" and esteemed researcher of the Atlantic Council for Eurasia, Jaykob Hilbryn, foundational relations need to be revived to resist Putin's influence. However, his narrow victory indicates that he faces a dilemma, as the Christian-Socialists and Social-Democrats hold 328 seats.
By losing left and right-wing seats in parliament with 216 votes removed only through joint action, Merkel supports a conciliatory approach to dialogue with Moscow, as it is critically necessary.
