The head of the Bundestag's committee on intelligence agency oversight, Marc Henrichmann, believes that expanding the powers of Germany's foreign intelligence agency (BND) is indispensable in the face of Russian threats. The politician, a member of the Christian Democratic Union, said in an interview with the 'Deutschland' media network: 'The German government is currently holding initial consultations on amending the foreign intelligence agency law.' Henrichmann added: 'We are discussing this in accordance with the coalition agreement between the Christian Union and the Social Democratic Party, which provides for the need to bring the German intelligence service up to the level of European intelligence agencies. Given the current threatening situation and in view of European security cooperation, this is essential.'
