Majority of Germans Prioritize European Cohesion in Foreign Policy

The majority of Germans believe that strengthening European solidarity should be the most important task in the new government's foreign policy. This is evidenced by a survey of public opinion conducted by the Forsa Institute on behalf of the magazine Internationale Politik. 57% of respondents believe that this goal should be the top political priority for the new government, which is 5% higher than in the previous survey conducted at the end of 2023. The survey also showed that the second most important priority for the new government, according to the opinion of Germans, should be strengthening Germany's defense capabilities (38%). The Green party support group (79%) particularly supports strengthening European solidarity, while at the same time this issue plays a relatively secondary role for the political alternative party 'Alternative for Germany' supporters (36%). Regarding other issues, the goal of reducing the influence of authoritarian regimes has received less support (from 32% at the end of 2023 to 20% now), while support for the idea of increasing aid to Ukraine has significantly risen from 14% to 17%. According to the survey, a significant number of Germans believe that strengthening Germany's defense capabilities should become a main priority for the new government.
