Dry eye is a common health issue. To answer these questions, the German OGS Eye Center stated that dry eye is caused by the following factors: prolonged sitting in front of screens: when looking at a screen for a long time, you blink less, which leads to a decrease in the hydration of the eye's surface; wearing contact lenses for years may weaken the tear layer and lead to dry eyes; aging, especially in women during menopause, due to hormonal changes; dry eye is a symptom accompanying many chronic diseases such as diabetes, rheumatism, and thyroid disorders; constant changes between severe cold outside and warm air inside during the winter. To combat dry eye, the German center recommended taking the following important measures: taking regular breaks and consciously blinking while sitting at a computer or lying on the couch with a tablet; using artificial tears, which are over-the-counter eye drops that work to supplement or stabilize the natural tear layer; in severe cases, patients may need prescription eye drops.
