How to Combat Back Pain in Winter

German orthopedist Lars Lorer explains the reasons for increased back pain in winter and gives recommendations for their prevention and treatment with physical exercises and heat.

How to Combat Back Pain in Winter

The body can be warmed by taking a warm bath, a sauna, or massaging the back with a hot water bottle or heating pad. A doctor should be consulted if the pain is very severe or lasts for more than four to six weeks. This also applies if the pain radiates to the legs or arms, or if there are sensory disturbances, paralysis, or unsteadiness when walking. German orthopedist Lars Lor attributed the worsening of back pain in winter to several reasons, primarily: weight gain, often due to overeating and lack of physical activity. He also pointed out that among these causes is also the lack of exposure to sunlight in winter, which has a negative impact on the hormonal system, leading to a deterioration in mood and an increased risk of depression, which in turn increases the body's sensitivity to pain, thereby exacerbating back pain. Cold also plays a role, albeit a minor one: muscles become stiffer and may cramp at low temperatures. To combat back pain during the winter, the German orthopedist advises taking the following measures: engaging in physical activities such as walking, cycling, and Pilates exercises, as well as taking the stairs instead of using the elevator. Heat also helps to relieve back pain by relaxing the muscles and improving blood circulation.
