'Germany Depression Index': Nearly Half of Adults Searched for Information

The 'Germany Depression Index' shows that nearly half of adults in the country have already searched online for information related to depression, while the actual percentage of those suffering from the disease is 78%. The results are based on an annual representative survey conducted by the German Depression Relief and Suicide Prevention Foundation, with the support of German Railways. This year, 5,196 adults aged 18 to 69 and 103 adolescents aged 16 to 17 participated in the survey. Since 2017, the index has regularly examined the attitudes and experiences of the population regarding depression—a disease that profoundly affects the thinking, feelings, and daily lives of those affected. According to the foundation, people who suspect they have depression should first consult their family doctor. The foundation explained that information and guidelines from the internet can be helpful but cannot replace professional treatment. The foundation also recommended paying attention to the credibility of sources on social media, checking whether the content comes from experts, clinics, or public health organizations, and presenting realistic treatment options.
