Saint Gertrude, a Cistercian Benedictine nun born on January 6, 1256, in Eisleben, Germany, was canonized in 1738. Today, November 16, her feast is celebrated as Saint Gertrude, Benedictine Virgin. Her life in the convent began at the age of five when she entered the convent of Helfta, Saxony, where she received an education in the liberal arts and Latin.
Gertrude grew up in the female Cistercian monastery of Helfta and at the age of 26 had a vision of Jesus that led her to dedicate her life to Him. Throughout her life, she experienced mystical visions and physical trials, which accompanied her until her death in 1302.
