The legend of German women's football, Doris Fitschen, passed away at the age of 56 after a long battle with illness, her family announced. A midfield player, she played 144 matches for the Germany national team from 1986 to 2001 and helped the team win its first championship at the European Championship in 1989.
"We share all the feelings and support with our close relatives and friends," said the president of the German Football Federation, Bernd Neuendorf, adding that Doris was one of the leading figures in German football.
In her career, she also won three other continental titles and earned a bronze medal at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. At the club level with Lyon, she won three national titles and cups, then with Frankfurt.
Later, she held the position of general manager of the women's national team from 2009 to 2016, working with the German football federation, leading the women's football strategy.
