On Friday, the U.S. Secretary of State Mark Rubin expressed his condemnation of the "classification of the Alternative for Germany" as a grouping of "right-wing extremism" after domestic intelligence agencies decided to classify the party. Rubin stated: "The decision by territorial authorities to determine parliament as the extreme right of extremists is yet another step to close the open society, where free discourse is replaced by silence and repression." In other words, Germany's decision is viewed as an attempt to silence the opposition and demonize it.
