Forest Sounds Improve Mental Well-being

A new study proves that sounds from familiar forests positively affect mental health, reducing stress and improving concentration.

Forest Sounds Improve Mental Well-being

A recent study has shown that the sounds of nature in forests positively impact mental well-being, especially when they come from familiar local environments. The findings, led by the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research, the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, Leipzig University, Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg, and the University of Freiburg, were published in the 'Journal of Environmental Psychology'. Participants in Germany reported that nature sounds from local environments were more impactful and relaxing compared to sounds from tropical forests. Participants also felt a general improvement when they believed they were hearing a large number of animal species. The study involved 195 people who listened to one-minute audio recordings of birdsong in forests, along with background sounds. Some participants listened to recordings from local forests in Germany and Poland, while others listened to recordings from tropical forests in Panama. Participants listened to two recordings and reported on their mental state, stress levels, and ability to concentrate before and after listening. A statement from the center noted that listening to forest sounds for one minute via headphones led to an improvement in overall well-being.
