Rising Poverty Risk Among Seniors in Germany

According to the data from Eurostat, around 3.2 million elderly people aged 65 and older in Germany are facing the risk of poverty. The critical situation affected 3.245 million people last year, 3.157 million people in 2022, and about 3.3 million people in 2021.

According to the analysis conducted by the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, these figures turned out to be higher than in previous years. Specifically, in 2013, only about 2.4 million people aged 65 and older were formally at risk of poverty. In the following years, the number of this group increased around the threshold by 2.4 million or slightly less.

This group included people whose income after social benefits was less than 60% of the average income in Germany.
