A survey reveals that 27% of German households have no savings, with the share of savers declining. Rising living costs are depleting financial reserves for many families.


Over a quarter of Germans have no savings due to rising costs

According to a survey conducted by 'Ipsos' institute commissioned by 'ING' bank, more than a quarter of German households have no savings. 27% of 1007 participants stated they have no money saved, up from 23.5% in a previous survey. Meanwhile, the percentage of savers decreased from 70.7% in 2024 to 63.7% in last December's poll. 46.7% of participants said their income is insufficient for saving. 22% of respondents said rising living costs have depleted their financial reserves, and 17.9% expressed concern about their financial situation. Additionally, 36.5% agreed with the statement: 'Because of my financial situation, I feel I will never be able to afford the things I want in life'.
