Germany Faces Defense Spending Dilemma

Germany, like the rest of Europe, is challenged to increase defense spending amidst financial constraints due to debt limits. Politician Friedrich Merz emphasizes the need for change to achieve greater independence from the U.S.

Germany Faces Defense Spending Dilemma

In his statements, politician Friedrich Merz gave to understand that Europe needs to learn to defend itself without the help of the USA. However, increasing military spending requires enormous sums, which complicates the crisis of defense. Specifically, the problem here concerns Germany, which, like other European countries, needs to increase expenditures, but is faced with constraints due to defense spending.

Merz did not touch upon the issues of reviving the weakened German economy or the reaction to the heightened activity of the far-right extremist party "Alternative for Germany," and accused the USA, Germany's main ally. He stated: "It is clear that Americans are not interested in European sovereignty."

Once again, the newly elected German parliament may not be able to create a two-thirds majority, as the largest share of votes went to two radical parties: "Alternative for Germany" and the former communist party, now known as the party "Die Linke."

Merz proposed an alternative to the Debt Law - a special fund of 200 billion euros for defensive expenditures, which became an alternative solution that the current Chancellor Olaf Scholz is leaning towards.

The Social Democratic Party, which previously was in the ruling coalition, received its worst results, but can form a reasonable coalition with another party - the Greens, which would allow them to secure a majority in the parliament.

An amendment to the law is required, demanding a two-thirds majority. The ideal option would have been to eliminate the Debt Law entirely, as they hinder not only military spending but also other projects, such as roads, railroads, digital infrastructure, schools, and much more.

Merz pointed out that for Germany it is important to achieve independence from the USA in Europe, emphasizing that its main priority is to help Europe become independent from the USA.
