Heartburn Treatment and Risks of Esophageal Cancer

Doctors from Hannover Medical School warn that untreated heartburn can lead to permanent changes in the esophagus lining and increase the risk of esophageal cancer. Proper treatment and dietary adjustments are crucial.

Heartburn Treatment and Risks of Esophageal Cancer

Doctors from a clinic in Hanover, Germany, warned that ignoring reflux could increase the risk of developing esophageal cancer. They noted that persistent reflux causes histological changes in the lining of the esophagus, leading to the development of Barrett's esophagus, which increases the risk of esophageal cancer.

An abnormal division of the glandular layer can also lead to esophageal adenocarcinoma, which in turn can cause serious complications. To alleviate reflux symptoms—such as a feeling of a lump in the chest, reflux, a burning sensation in the throat, an unpleasant taste in the mouth, and pain in the upper part of the body—doctors recommend changing the diet and excluding from the diet fatty, spicy, acidic foods, as well as coffee, carbonated drinks, and alcohol.

If symptoms of reflux are present, such as sounds in the chest, pain while swallowing, a feeling of heaviness, nausea, belching, or pain in the teeth from exposure to enamel, it is important to consult a doctor. If conservative treatment of reflux does not lead to improvements, surgical intervention may be required to strengthen the sphincter of the esophagus and prevent recurrence of glandular content.
