The lead actors, Swedish Stellan Skarsgård and Norwegian Renate Reinsve, each won two acting awards, and Trier was honored with the Best Director award. The travel film 'Serre,' directed by French filmmaker Olivier Lacis, won five awards and tells the story of a father and son searching for their lost daughter in the desert. The European Film Awards ceremony, which is hosted by Berlin and another city alternately, was held for the 38th time, with approximately 5400 members of the European Film Academy voting on a series of winners deemed worthy of recognition. The members selected 'Fumee ou la Mort' as the Best Documentary, and Norwegian actress and director Liv Ullmann, known for 'Scenes from a Marriage,' received a Lifetime Achievement award.
